Fastest way to safely clean mold with kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I finally checked behind their bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah villa. I found a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the wall, probably from the last time we had the AC condensation leak. What’s the fastest way to get this cleaned safely with a 3-year-old and a baby in the house?

Evacuate the room immediately and keep the children away from the area. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself, but with infants present, extreme caution is required. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Do not use bleach, as it only discolors mold and does not kill the roots; it can also release harmful fumes into your home's air.

However, given this is likely from an AC condensation leak—a very common issue in Dubai villas due to our high humidity and year-round AC use—the wall is probably damp inside. DIY cleaning only addresses surface mold; the moisture source is still active. The mold will return unless the leak is repaired and any trapped moisture within the wall cavity is properly dried.

The fastest and safest method with young children is a professional containment and remediation. They will seal the area with plastic sheeting, use HEPA air scrubbers to filter spores from the air during cleaning, and safely remove contaminated materials. For a confirmed leak, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent of the damage behind the walls. After remediation, a post-cleaning verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the air is safe for your children.
