Is bathroom mold causing our family's health issues?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and my husband's asthma has gotten way worse. I finally pulled back the vanity in our master bathroom and found a huge patch of black mold growing on the wall behind the pipes. We're in an older building in Bur Dubai and the bathroom ventilation is terrible. Could this mold be the cause of their health issues and how dangerous is it?

Yes, the black mold behind your vanity is very likely contributing to your family's respiratory issues. The constant coughing and worsened asthma are classic symptoms of exposure to mold spores, particularly in a confined space like a bathroom with poor ventilation.

In Dubai's high humidity, bathrooms are prime locations for mold growth due to condensation from showers and year-round AC use creating temperature differentials. The "black mold" you describe often refers to Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger, both of which are known to produce irritants and allergens that can trigger asthma attacks and persistent coughs, especially in children and those with pre-existing conditions.

Given the health symptoms and the extent of the growth you've found, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the specific species to understand the health risk and locate the moisture source—likely a hidden pipe leak or chronic condensation in your building's age and design. Remediation must include fixing the water issue first; simply cleaning the visible mold is a temporary solution.

For immediate action, improve ventilation by running the exhaust fan during and after showers for at least 30 minutes. Keep the bathroom door open to allow humidity to disperse. Do not attempt to disturb the mold yourself, as this will release a large number of spores into your home's air. A proper remediation will involve containment, removal of affected materials, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth.
