Best long-term solution for damp closet and black mold« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has developed black spots on the back wall, and all our winter clothes stored inside smell damp. We had that period of heavy dew and humidity a couple of weeks ago, and it's been like this ever since, even after I wiped it down with vinegar. What's the best long-term solution to stop this from coming back every winter? Should I invest in a dehumidifier or is there a specific type of paint or treatment for the walls?

The damp closet and black spots are classic signs of condensation mould, a very common issue in Dubai villas during the cooler, humid winter months. The wall you're seeing is likely a cold surface where moisture from the air is condensing, creating the perfect damp environment for mould to grow. Vinegar only addresses surface growth, not the underlying moisture problem.

For a long-term solution, start by identifying and addressing the source of humidity. Ensure the closet is not on an exterior wall with inadequate insulation. Improve air circulation around the closet; leaving the door ajar can help significantly. A small, portable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside the closet can be very effective at pulling moisture from the air in that enclosed space.

Before any remediation, the mould should be professionally tested to confirm the species, as some types require specific containment protocols for safe removal. For painting, a mould-resistant primer designed for high-humidity environments is essential, but it will only be effective after the moisture issue is fully resolved and all existing mould is properly remediated.

In many cases, the root cause is a lack of ventilation combined with the high ambient humidity. For a persistent problem like this, a professional inspection can identify hidden moisture sources within the wall cavity and recommend structural solutions, such as improving insulation or adding a vapour barrier, to prevent it from recurring annually.
