Could mold in our Dubai villa be causing kids' coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from the summer break, and I just found a bunch of black spots behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. We’re in a Jumeirah villa and I’m worried the humidity from the last few weeks has caused it to spread. Could this mold be the reason for their coughs and what’s the best way to get it professionally cleaned here?

Yes, the mold you found is very likely contributing to your children's persistent coughs. In Dubai's high humidity, especially after a summer break with reduced AC use, mold spores thrive and become airborne irritants. These spores directly irritate the respiratory tract, leading to coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy or asthma symptoms, which children are particularly sensitive to.

The black spots behind the wardrobe are a classic sign of condensation mold, caused by poor air circulation and the temperature differential between the cool room and the warm exterior wall—a common issue in Jumeirah villas. The recent humid weather has created ideal conditions for it to spread.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will identify the full extent of the growth, even inside walls or under flooring, and most importantly, take air and surface samples for lab analysis to determine the exact species. This is critical because it confirms the health risk and dictates the correct remediation protocol.

Proper remediation is not just wiping it away. It involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores during cleaning, removing contaminated porous materials like drywall or insulation, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobial treatments. After removal, the root cause—like the condensation issue behind the wardrobe—must be addressed, often with improved ventilation or dehumidification.

For verification, always hire a company that provides documented before-and-after lab results to prove the spore count has been returned to safe levels. This is the standard for reputable providers in the UAE and ensures the job is done completely, not just cosmetically.
