Urgent to clean AC mold in Jumeirah villa?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be our bedroom AC unit. I just pulled the filter out and the entire plastic housing around it is covered in a black, powdery substance. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this now after the recent humidity. How urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, and can we just clean the filter ourselves in the meantime?

That black, powdery substance is a strong indicator of active mold growth, and given the symptoms you're describing, this situation warrants prompt professional attention. The high humidity we've had recently creates ideal conditions for mold in AC systems, as the cold evaporator coil produces condensation that never fully dries out.
Do not attempt to clean the filter yourself. A contaminated filter releases spores when handled, and cleaning it does nothing to address the mold growing deep inside the unit's plastic housing and on the coil. Your immediate step should be to turn the AC unit off at the circuit breaker to stop it from actively blowing spores into your bedroom. In Dubai villas, this type of contamination is common due to year-round AC use and the significant daily moisture load. For a case this visible and with associated health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use borescopes to assess the internal evaporator coil and ductwork, which is where the most concerning growth typically occurs. The goal is to identify the full extent of the problem, as surface cleaning is ineffective if the core of the unit is contaminated. A proper remediation involves specialized equipment to contain the area, antimicrobial treatments, and most importantly, a thorough cleaning of the entire internal assembly, not just the filter. Once cleaned, a post-remediation verification test is the only way to confirm the unit's air is clean and safe for your family. Given the health impact you're seeing, addressing this thoroughly is a priority. |
