Can I clean small mold area myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity lately. It's not a huge area, maybe the size of a dinner plate, but I'm worried about their health. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies?

Given Dubai's high humidity and condensation issues, especially during summer months, small mold patches behind furniture are common. For an area the size of a dinner plate, you can attempt cleaning yourself if the children are not in the room and you have no pre-existing respiratory conditions.

Use a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) or a dedicated mold cleaner, not vinegar, which is often ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area thoroughly, let the solution sit for 15 minutes, then wipe it dry. However, this only addresses surface mold you can see.

The critical concern is what's behind the wall. Mold growth on a surface often indicates a larger moisture problem within the wall cavity, possibly from a small condensation leak or a breach in the vapor barrier. Cleaning the surface may offer a temporary visual fix, but the colony will likely return if the underlying moisture source isn't identified and resolved.

Given the symptoms your children are experiencing—coughing—and the location in a bedroom, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside the wall for hidden growth and can identify the precise moisture source. For health-related cases, a lab test to identify the mold species can also be crucial, as some types are more strongly associated with respiratory irritation. The goal isn't just to clean what's visible but to ensure the environment is truly healthy and the root cause is fixed.
