How to stop mold in humid closet for good?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for a few years, but since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago, I keep finding small black spots in the back of our walk-in closet, especially on leather bags and shoes stored there. I’m really worried about our health and ruining more of our stuff. What’s the most effective way to control the humidity in a specific room like this to stop the mold from coming back?

Closet mold in Dubai's humidity is a common issue, especially in older villas with less insulation. The black spots are likely Aspergillus or Cladosporium, which thrive on dust and organic materials like leather in stagnant, humid air. The most effective long-term solution is controlling the room's moisture level.
Start by improving air circulation. Leave the closet door ajar and ensure room AC vents aren't blocked. Run a small, portable dehumidifier inside the closet, aiming to keep humidity below 60%. For items already affected, clean leather with a diluted vinegar solution and allow them to dry completely in a well-ventilated area before storing again. For a permanent fix, the root cause must be addressed. The closet likely has poor air exchange and may be on an exterior wall suffering from thermal bridging, causing condensation. Professional inspection can identify if the room's AC is undersized or if hidden condensation within the wall cavity is feeding the mold. In many cases, adding supplemental ventilation like a small duct fan or a dedicated dehumidification system for that room is necessary to stop it for good. |
