How to permanently kill mold on an exterior wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on the wall facing the outside. It’s gotten way worse since last week’s humidity. What’s the most effective way to kill this mold for good without having to call in a professional team straight away?

That black mold behind your wardrobe on an exterior wall is a classic symptom of condensation issues here in Dubai. The wall is likely colder than the room's air, causing moisture to condense and create the perfect environment for mold, especially with last week's high humidity. The wardrobe traps this damp air against the wall, accelerating the growth.

For a permanent fix, you must address the moisture source first. Simply killing the visible mold is a temporary solution if the condensation continues. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air to circulate. Wipe down the wall thoroughly with a mixture of detergent and water to remove the surface growth. Then, use a dedicated mold-killing product like a hydrogen peroxide-based spray or a diluted vinegar solution; test any cleaner on a small, hidden area first to ensure it doesn't damage your paint. Allow the wall to dry completely.

However, killing the mold is only half the battle. To prevent its return, you need to reduce the condensation on that cold wall. This often requires improving room ventilation to keep humid air moving and may involve using a dehumidifier. In many Dubai villas and apartments, the underlying issue is insufficient thermal insulation in the exterior wall itself, which is a common construction standard here.

If the mold is extensive, has penetrated the drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, the problem is beyond a surface-level fix. In such cases, a professional inspection is needed to identify the exact cause of the condensation and assess any potential hidden damage within the wall cavity. They can provide a remediation plan that addresses the root cause for a permanent solution.
