How to remove mold from closet without damaging paint?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s been worse since the recent humidity. What’s the best way to get rid of this mold for good without ruining the wall paint?

First, address the moisture source. That wall likely has condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall, a very common issue here. Wiping the mold with bleach or vinegar is a temporary fix and will damage the paint; it also doesn't address the root cause.

For a small area, use a hydrogen peroxide solution (3%) or a dedicated mold remover designed for painted surfaces. Test it on a small, hidden area first. Gently dab—don't scrub—the solution onto the mold with a soft cloth. Scrubbing can push spores deeper and damage the paint film. Ensure the area is well-ventilated during cleaning.

After cleaning, the wall must be completely dry. Use a fan or dehumidifier in the room for at least 24 hours. To prevent recurrence, improve air circulation in the closet. Leave the door ajar, and avoid overpacking it. Consider using a renewable desiccant like silica gel packets to manage the micro-climate where your winter clothes are stored.

However, if the mold has spread over a large area (generally more than one square meter), has penetrated the drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, the issue is likely inside the wall cavity. In this case, a professional inspection is needed to assess the wall's integrity and moisture content. Remediation often requires removing a section of the wall to treat the cavity, which is not a DIY task. For persistent problems, a lab test can identify the mold type to guide the safest removal protocol.
