Could mold behind bed cause kids' persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month, especially after they've been playing in their bedroom. I finally pulled their bed away from the wall and found a huge patch of black mold hidden behind it, probably from a slow leak in the AC unit. I'm terrified they've been breathing this in every night. Could this mold be the reason for their persistent cough and sore throats?

Yes, the mold behind their bed is very likely the cause of their persistent cough and sore throats. In Dubai's climate, hidden mold growth from AC condensation leaks is a common trigger for respiratory irritation, especially in children.

The constant cough is a classic reaction to inhaling mold spores, which act as a powerful irritant to the lungs and throat. Children are more susceptible because they breathe faster and have smaller airways. The fact that symptoms are worse in the bedroom and improve when they are elsewhere strongly points to this environmental cause.

For immediate action, move the children to another room to sleep. Do not attempt to clean the large patch yourself, as disturbing it will release a massive cloud of spores. The leak from the AC unit must be identified and repaired by a professional HVAC technician first; otherwise, the mold will return.

For a case of this size and with health symptoms already present, a professional mold inspection is strongly recommended. They can assess the full extent of the growth, identify the species (some types of black mold are more problematic than others), and provide a protocol for safe remediation that contains the spores rather than spreading them throughout your home. The goal is to verify the environment is returned to a safe state through post-remediation testing.
