What's the best local product to remove and prevent shower mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for two years and just noticed these black and greenish spots spreading in the grout between the tiles in the shower. It's been so humid lately that the bathroom never seems to fully dry out, even with the exhaust fan running. What's the most effective product I can find locally to kill this mold and prevent it from coming back?

Look for a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner or a concentrated chlorine bleach solution, both widely available at ACE Hardware, Carrefour, or West Elm. For grout, a thick, paste-like cleaner you can apply and leave on is more effective than a spray.
Apply the product directly to the mold, let it sit for the time specified on the label (usually 10-15 minutes), and then scrub with a stiff brush. The key is ensuring the surface is dry afterward; run your exhaust fan for at least an hour after showering and consider using a squeegee on the walls. In Dubai's humidity, this is non-negotiable for prevention. If the mold is extensive, has penetrated behind the tiles, or returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, the issue is likely inside the wall. Surface cleaning won't solve a deeper moisture problem. In these cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters is needed to find the hidden source. |
