Is black mold urgent to remove professionally or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, I’m worried it’s spreading. How urgent is it to get this professionally removed, or can I handle it myself with a trip to ACE Hardware?

Black mold in a Dubai bedroom closet, especially on an exterior wall, is a common issue due to our high humidity and the temperature differential causing condensation. The urgency depends on the size and cause.
For a small patch (under one square foot), DIY is often possible. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Clean the area with a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach. Scrub thoroughly, let it dry completely, and dispose of any contaminated materials like cardboard boxes. The critical step is identifying and fixing the moisture source—this is often a small condensation leak from an AC duct in the ceiling or wall void, or inadequate insulation in the external wall. If the area is larger, has recurred after cleaning, or you notice a persistent musty smell, professional assessment is strongly recommended. DIY solutions often address surface growth only, missing the root cause hidden inside the wall. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact source of water intrusion. In many cases, the wall may need to be opened to dry the structure and treat the mold at its source to prevent it from returning. For health safety, especially with black mold and its potential to cause respiratory irritation, a professional approach is the most reliable way to ensure the problem is resolved. |
