Is my family's cough from black mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it, probably from a hidden AC leak. What are the actual health risks from this, and should I take them to a doctor for testing immediately?

Black mold exposure is a likely cause of persistent coughing, especially in children. The damp, hidden environment behind your sofa is an ideal breeding ground for mold spores, which become airborne and irritate the respiratory system. This is a common issue in Dubai apartments where high humidity and AC condensation leaks create persistent moisture problems.

You should take your children to a doctor and inform them about the mold discovery. The doctor can assess their symptoms, which often mimic allergies or asthma—coughing, wheezing, and nasal congestion. There is no specific "mold test" for people; diagnosis is based on exposure history and symptom pattern. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and removing the exposure source.

Do not attempt to clean a significant patch yourself. Disturbing it will release a large cloud of spores. The AC leak must be identified and repaired by a qualified technician first, as any remediation is pointless if the moisture source remains. For a contamination of this size, professional mold inspection and remediation is strongly advised. They will use containment procedures and HEPA filtration to safely remove the biomass and verify with testing that the spore count in your air has returned to a normal level.

In the interim, improve ventilation in the room as much as possible and consider using a high-quality air purifier with a HEPA filter to help reduce the airborne spore concentration while you arrange for professional assessment.
