How to control closet humidity in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has developed black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. Our villa in Jumeirah is quite humid, especially since the weather turned hot and we've had the AC running constantly. I'm worried this is mold and it's going to ruin everything. What's the most effective way to control humidity in a closed closet space here in Dubai to prevent this from happening again?

The black spots on your leather items are likely mold, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate, especially in enclosed spaces like closets on interior walls. The constant AC use creates significant temperature differences that lead to condensation and trapped moisture, which mold thrives on.

Start by removing all affected items from the closet to prevent further damage and cross-contamination. For the leather goods, gently wipe them down with a soft, dry cloth and then a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar. Allow them to dry completely away from direct sunlight, which can crack the leather, before considering returning them to the closet.

To control humidity in the closet itself, the most effective solution is improving air circulation. Avoid overpacking the closet, as tight spaces restrict airflow. Leave the closet door ajar for a few hours each day to allow conditioned air from the room to circulate. For a more active solution, a small, rechargeable dehumidifier unit or even a container of silica gel desiccant beads placed on a shelf can help absorb excess moisture. These are widely available at home stores here.

Addressing the room's overall humidity is also crucial. Ensure your AC unit is set to a consistent temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, and that it's functioning correctly with clean filters. If the room still feels damp, a standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom can make a significant difference.

If the mold growth is extensive, has a musty odour, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to identify hidden dampness in the wall and conduct air quality tests to identify the mold species, which is important for health reasons and effective remediation. In villas, the root cause can sometimes be a minor leak in the plumbing or AC condensate drain line within the wall that needs to be addressed.
