How to safely clean and prevent black mold behind furniture?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably because we never move the heavy furniture. The room is in a corner of our villa in Jumeirah and doesn't get much direct sunlight. What’s the best way to clean this safely and prevent it from coming back for good?

Black mold behind furniture is common in Dubai's humid climate, especially in low-sunlight areas like your Jumeirah villa bedroom. The constant AC use creates temperature differentials that lead to condensation on cooler exterior walls, providing ideal conditions for mold growth.

For safe cleaning, first move the wardrobe to ventilate the area. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix one part white vinegar with four parts water—avoid bleach as it only removes surface color and can release harmful fumes. Scrub the area gently, then dry it thoroughly with a fan. Discard any porous materials like contaminated cardboard or fabric.

To prevent recurrence, keep the wardrobe at least two inches from the wall to allow air circulation. Consider a small dehumidifier or moisture-absorbing products like silica gel packs in that corner. Wipe down walls periodically to remove condensation.

Since your children are coughing, this indicates potential spore dispersal. For health safety and accurate identification, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is recommended. Dubai Municipality guidelines advise certified remediation for visible mold exceeding 0.5 square meters, which this likely exceeds. A local company with a microbiology lab can identify the mold species and confirm the area is safe post-cleaning.
