How to safely treat and prevent black mold in bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our building in Jumeirah Village Circle, and the room always feels more humid than the rest of the apartment. What's the best way to treat this safely and what can I do to stop it from coming back for good?

Black mold in a bedroom closet is a common issue in Dubai, especially on exterior walls where temperature differences cause condensation. The high humidity here creates a perfect environment for it to grow.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can treat it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted detergent. Scrub the area thoroughly, ensuring you don't just smear the spores. Dry it completely with a fan immediately after cleaning. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can worsen indoor air quality.

To stop it from returning, you must address the moisture source. This wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the outside heat meets your AC-cooled interior, causing condensation. Improve air circulation by not overstuffing the closet and leaving the door ajar. A small desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet can make a significant difference. For the room's overall humidity, ensure your AC is running efficiently and its drain line is not clogged, as this can add moisture to the air.

If the mold patch is large, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact condensation level within the wall and perform air quality tests to identify the spore count and species, which is important for assessing risk. In severe cases, remediation may involve removing affected drywall to properly treat the cavity behind it.
