How to safely clean black mold behind dresser?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual for the past few weeks, and I’m starting to worry it’s because of the black spots I just found behind our bedroom dresser in Jumeirah. The wall feels slightly damp to the touch. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this myself to prevent it from coming back and affecting their health?

The damp wall and black spots behind your dresser in Jumeirah are a classic sign of a condensation issue, made worse by our high humidity and constant AC use creating a cold surface against a warmer wall. For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself safely.
First, keep your children out of the room during the process. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Move the dresser to allow the wall to dry completely; use a fan to accelerate drying. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (1 cup bleach to 1 gallon of water) in a spray bottle. Never mix vinegar and bleach. Lightly mist the affected area, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Dispose of all cleaning materials afterwards. The most critical step is to identify and fix the moisture source to prevent immediate regrowth. This is likely poor air circulation. Reposition the dresser a few inches away from the wall to allow air to flow behind it. Consistently run your AC on dry mode to manage indoor humidity levels, which should ideally be kept below 60%. However, if the mold covers a larger area, the wall remains persistently damp, or the coughing persists after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY cleaning only addresses surface growth, and hidden mold within the wall can continue to affect indoor air quality. A proper assessment includes moisture mapping and air quality tests to identify the full extent of the issue, which is common in Dubai's climate due to our building envelope challenges. |
