How to clean and prevent mold from AC in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a faint, damp smell every time it kicks on, and I just found a few small black spots in the corner of my bedroom closet. We keep the temperature low, but I'm worried the humidity is still causing a problem. What's the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back, especially during the summer months?

The damp smell and black spots point to active mold growth, a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use. The first step is to identify the moisture source; it's often condensation from the AC unit itself or a small, unnoticed leak.

For the small visible spots in the closet, you can clean them with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, this only addresses surface mold you can see. The damp smell from the AC suggests mold is likely growing inside the unit or the ductwork, which requires professional cleaning. DIY attempts often just spread spores.

To prevent recurrence, controlling humidity is critical. Ensure your AC's drain line is not clogged and the drip pan is functioning. Keep indoor humidity below 60%; a cheap hygrometer can monitor this. Run exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens, and consider a dedicated dehumidifier, especially during the more humid summer months.

For a persistent smell or recurring problem, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use borescopes to inspect inside walls and ducts and take air/surface samples for lab analysis to identify the species and concentration, which dictates the correct remediation method. Simply cleaning the visible part often misses the root cause inside the system.
