Found mold behind bathroom vanity in Dubai. Landlord or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I finally pulled back the vanity cabinet today and found a bunch of black and green mold spreading on the wall behind the pipes. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. What’s the best way to deal with this properly in Dubai’s humidity, and should I call my landlord first or just handle it myself?

Document the mold with clear photos and notify your landlord in writing immediately. Under Dubai rental law (RERA), landlords are typically responsible for resolving issues like this that affect the property's habitability and are not due to tenant negligence.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture, but this is a temporary fix if the moisture source isn't addressed. The constant high humidity here means mold will almost certainly return without proper remediation.

Given its location behind a vanity, this suggests a persistent hidden moisture issue, likely from a slow pipe leak or severe condensation. DIY cleaning only addresses the visible growth, not the root cause. A professional inspection is recommended to identify and fix the moisture source and assess if the mold has spread into the wall cavity, which is common in such scenarios. In Dubai's climate, improper handling can disperse spores and worsen the problem.

For a verifiable resolution, request that any remediation company provides before-and-after lab testing to confirm the mold species and that the environment has been returned to a safe, dry state.
