How to remove black mold and prevent humidity issues?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It's been extra humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading behind our clothes. What's the best way to completely remove this ourselves and is there anything we can do to stop the humidity from causing it again?

Black mold in closets is common here due to Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation on cold interior walls. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can handle it yourself safely.
Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix one part bleach with four parts water, or use a dedicated mold remover spray. Apply it to the area, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Dry the area completely with a fan afterward. Never mix bleach with ammonia-based cleaners. To prevent it from returning, you must address the humidity source. This is an interior wall, so the cold surface from AC is likely condensing moisture from the air. Improve airflow by not overpacking the closet and leaving a small gap between the wall and your clothes. A small renewable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside the closet can help significantly. For a recurring issue or if the patch is larger than a square foot, the moisture problem may be more serious. Persistent mold behind walls often requires professional assessment to identify the exact source and ensure it's fully remediated, as improper handling can spread spores. |
