How to treat and prevent bedroom mold for good?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really damp lately, especially in the corner behind the wardrobe. I’ve started noticing small black spots on the wall there and my allergies have been acting up every morning. We run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help this one area. What’s the most effective way to treat this and prevent it from coming back for good?

That damp corner and black spots are classic signs of a localised mould issue, very common in Dubai villas due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The wall behind the wardrobe is likely a cold spot where condensation forms, providing the moisture mould needs to grow.

First, address the source. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation. Wipe the affected area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mould-cleaning product. Do not simply paint over it, as the mould will regrow.

For lasting prevention, you must control the humidity. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly; a clogged drain line can raise indoor humidity. Consider using a standalone dehumidifier in that room, especially during more humid months, to keep relative humidity below 60%. Improving cross-ventilation by occasionally opening windows when outdoor humidity is lower can also help.

If the mould covers more than one square meter, is recurring despite cleaning, or your allergy symptoms are significant, a professional inspection is advised. They can use a moisture meter to identify any hidden dampness within the wall and perform air or swab testing to identify the mould species, which is crucial for understanding any health risks and ensuring the remediation protocol is correct. In many cases, the root cause is a small, unseen leak or insufficient insulation in that exterior wall, which requires targeted repair.
