How to permanently stop mold in wardrobe on exterior wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the back of the master bedroom wardrobe, which is on the exterior wall. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried the problem is inside the wall itself, especially after the heavier than usual dew we get in the mornings. What is the most effective way to not only clean this but to stop the moisture from coming through and prevent it from coming back for good?

The moisture is likely condensation forming on the cooler interior surface of your exterior wall, a common issue in Dubai's high humidity, especially with AC cooling the indoor air. Simply cleaning the visible mold won't stop it from returning; you must address the root cause of the moisture.

First, identify the source. A professional inspection with a thermal imaging camera can pinpoint the exact location and severity of the condensation or any hidden water intrusion within the wall cavity. For a permanent fix, the wall's insulation needs to be evaluated. Often, the solution involves improving the thermal break to prevent the cold interior air from meeting the warm, humid exterior air, which causes condensation. This is a structural fix.

Until a permanent solution is implemented, increase air circulation inside the wardrobe. Leave the doors ajar and consider a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. Keep the exterior wall as clear as possible to allow air to flow. For the existing mold, a solution of diluted white vinegar can clean small surface areas, but avoid bleach as it can set the stain and doesn't kill roots.

For a problem of this nature, a certified mold inspector can provide a definitive diagnosis and a remediation plan that addresses the moisture source, not just the symptom. Given the villa's construction and the potential for mold inside the wall, this is the most effective path to a permanent solution.
