Is the mold from my AC dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last couple of weeks and now I keep waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat. I've just noticed a patch of black spots growing on the wall behind the curtain where it's damp. Is this the kind of mold that can cause serious health issues, or am I just overreacting?

Your symptoms and the visible mold growth are directly connected. The damp environment from your AC leak creates ideal conditions for mold, which thrives in Dubai's high humidity, especially when condensation issues are present inside AC units.

The black spots are likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, common in AC systems here. While not all molds are highly toxic, any mold can cause the allergic reactions you're experiencing—stuffy nose, sore throat, and irritation. For individuals with asthma or compromised immune systems, the risk of more severe respiratory issues increases significantly.

You are not overreacting. The UAE's DHA guidelines treat indoor mold as a health concern requiring remediation. The first step is to stop the moisture source; have an AC technician repair the leak immediately. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem. Disturbing it without proper containment spreads spores throughout your bedroom.

For a situation like this, where there is visible growth and correlated health symptoms, a professional inspection is recommended. They can take samples to identify the species and assess the spore count in your indoor air. This lab analysis, which we perform in our microbiology lab, is the only way to determine the specific type and potential health risks. Remediation should follow Dubai Municipality standards for containment and removal to ensure it is done safely and effectively.
