How to treat moldy items and prevent closet dampness?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Arabian Ranches has started getting black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. I only noticed it after the weather changed last week and it feels damp inside. What's the best way to treat the items already affected and what can I do to the closet itself to stop this from happening again?

Leather items with visible mold growth require immediate attention. First, take them outside to brush off the spores with a soft brush. Wipe the surface with a cloth dampened with a 50/50 solution of water and isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated leather cleaner, then allow them to air dry completely away from direct sunlight. For valuable items, consult a professional leather restorer to avoid damage.

For the closet itself, empty it completely. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water and thoroughly wipe down all interior surfaces—walls, shelves, and the back of the door. This kills surface mold. Leave the closet open with a fan circulating air to ensure it is bone-dry before returning any items.

The dampness is likely due to condensation, a common issue here where cold AC-chilled interior walls meet Dubai's warm, humid air. This creates a perfect environment for mold. To prevent recurrence, improve air circulation. Leave the closet door ajar regularly and ensure the room's AC vent isn't blocked or closed. A small renewable desiccant like silica gel packs inside the closet can help control moisture.

If the problem is persistent or the wall itself feels cold and damp, the issue may be more serious, like a hidden condensation issue within the wall or insufficient insulation—common in villas. In such cases, a professional inspection with a thermal moisture meter can identify the exact source of the moisture intrusion, which is necessary for a permanent fix.
