Safest way to clean black mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been really humid lately. What's the safest and most effective way to clean this myself, or should I call a professional company in Dubai right away?

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself safely. First, identify and fix the moisture source. In Dubai, this is often condensation from an AC unit's cold air hitting a warm exterior wall, or a small leak from a pipe or window seal during humid periods.
Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and covering the floor with plastic. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (follow product instructions carefully). Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. Dispose of any porous materials like damaged cardboard boxes that were in direct contact. If the mold returns quickly, covers a large area, is in your HVAC system, or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of dampness and perform lab testing to identify the mold species, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. In many Dubai villas and apartments, the root cause is a lack of thermal break in external walls, leading to persistent condensation that DIY cleaning cannot resolve long-term. |
