How to safely remove mold from Dubai villa closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It’s gotten worse since the weather turned more humid. What's the best way to get rid of this safely, and should I call one of those professional mold remediation companies here in Dubai or is it a DIY job?

The black spots spreading in your closet are a classic sign of a humidity-driven mold issue, very common in Jumeirah villas. The recent humid weather and year-round AC use create significant condensation, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets against exterior walls.

For a contained area like this, you can attempt a careful DIY clean if the affected area is smaller than one square meter and no one in the household has respiratory issues. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Move all clothing and items out. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (check manufacturer guidelines for the surface), scrub the area, and allow it to dry completely. Dispose of any cleaning materials used.

However, the fact it's spreading and located behind items suggests a possible moisture source from a condensation line or a minor leak in the wall. Simply cleaning the surface may not address the root cause, and the mold will return. For a persistent case like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of moisture—this is the critical step for a permanent fix.

Reputable remediation companies in Dubai should provide a detailed protocol, including containment to prevent spores spreading to other parts of the house, HEPA filtration, and most importantly, a written cause-and-correction report. The key is to verify they offer post-remediation testing to confirm the environment is back to a healthy baseline; this is what separates a proper job from a superficial cleaning.
