Is this mold on my bedroom wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of the bedroom wall where our headboard is. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's mold. What's the best way to confirm if this is mold and who should I call first to get it properly assessed and removed?

Yes, that is very likely mold, especially given the recent high humidity and its location behind furniture where air circulation is poor. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue, particularly on exterior walls where temperature differences can cause condensation.

To confirm, you can perform a simple test: dab the spots with a cotton swab dipped in diluted bleach. If the color lightens or disappears significantly within a minute or two, it is almost certainly mold. Do not attempt to scrub it, as this can release spores.

For a proper assessment, you should first call a certified mold inspector, not a remediation company. An independent inspector provides an unbiased diagnosis and testing to identify the mold type and moisture source. They should use a moisture meter to check the wall's water content and may recommend air or surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab for analysis. This step is critical, as it determines the necessary scope of remediation and verifies the work was successful afterward.

Given it's a villa in Al Barsha, the source could be a minor plumbing leak in the wall, condensation from AC ducting, or moisture wicking from the foundation. A professional inspection will pinpoint this to prevent recurrence. For removal, only hire a company that follows IICRC standards and can provide a detailed protocol, including containment of the area and HEPA filtration, to safely remove the contaminated materials.
