Black mold in toddler's room: DIY removal or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our son's bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It must have been there a while and I'm really worried because my toddler has been having a persistent cough for the last few months. The room has an outside wall and I'm wondering if a leak from the recent heavy rains in Al Quoz might be the cause. What is the safest and most effective way to remove this ourselves, or should we just call a professional company right away?

Given your toddler's persistent cough and the mold's location on an outside wall, this likely requires professional assessment. The recent heavy rains in Al Quoz are a common cause of such leaks, as water can penetrate through cracks or faulty seals in the building envelope. The high humidity in Dubai, combined with year-round AC use, creates ideal conditions for mold growth once a moisture source is present.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt DIY removal with protective gear: an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a detergent solution, not bleach, as bleach only discolors mold and doesn't kill the roots. However, DIY is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved. The mold will return.

Given the health concern for your toddler and the potential for hidden moisture within the wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the leak's source and assess the full extent of the damage behind the surface. Reputable companies in Dubai should provide a detailed report with before-and-after lab testing to verify the mold species and confirm its removal. This is crucial for peace of mind, as improper remediation can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem.
