Mold exposure risks and doctor recommendation in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. It must have been there a while, hidden by the furniture, and I'm worried because my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches for months. What are the actual health risks from this kind of mold exposure, and should we see a specific type of doctor here in Dubai to get checked out?

The health risks depend on the mold species and your husband's sensitivity. Prolonged exposure to the damp, confined space behind the wardrobe can cause chronic allergic rhinitis—explaining the stuffy nose and headaches. Other common symptoms include persistent coughing, skin irritation, and fatigue. For individuals with asthma or compromised immune systems, the effects can be more severe.

In Dubai's climate, this is a frequent issue. Constant AC use creates cold surfaces; when humid air from outside meets these surfaces, like an exterior wall behind furniture, condensation forms and provides the perfect environment for mold growth, even if the room itself feels dry.

You should first consult a general practitioner or family doctor here in Dubai. Describe the prolonged symptoms and the mold discovery. They can assess his condition and may refer him to an allergist or a pulmonologist for specific tests to confirm if the symptoms are allergy-related. Treating the symptoms without addressing the source will only provide temporary relief.

A professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact species and the extent of the problem. The inspection should include moisture mapping to find the water source, as simply wiping the spots won't prevent recurrence. For a case that's been hidden this long, remediation is likely needed to properly address the root cause and ensure the spores are contained during cleaning.
