Is this toxic mold behind my kid's toy chest?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month, especially after they've been playing in their bedroom. I've just pulled out their toy chest from against the wall and found a patch of black and green fuzzy stuff spreading behind it. We're in an older building in Deira and the room doesn't get much sunlight. Is this definitely toxic mold and how quickly should I get a professional inspection done?

You cannot identify toxic mold by color alone. Black or green fuzzy growth could be Stachybotrys ("toxic black mold"), but it's just as likely to be a less hazardous species like Cladosporium or Aspergillus. The only way to know is through a professional inspection with lab analysis.

Given the symptoms—your children coughing persistently, especially after time in that room—and the environmental conditions (an older Deira building, low sunlight, poor air circulation behind furniture), this is a serious case that warrants immediate action. The high humidity in Dubai, combined with condensation from year-round AC use, creates ideal conditions for mold to thrive on cold walls. You should arrange for a professional inspection within the next few days.

Until then, restrict your children's access to the room. Do not attempt to clean the patch yourself, as disturbing it can release a large number of spores into the air. A proper inspection will involve moisture mapping the wall to find the source of the dampness and air or surface sampling sent to a microbiology lab to identify the species. This is critical, as the remediation protocol depends on the mold type. The report from a certified inspector will provide the evidence needed to engage your building management for repairs, as they are typically responsible for fixing the moisture source, such as a leaking pipe or inadequate insulation.
