Urgent: Mold found, safe to stay in house tonight?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled back the corner of the carpet in our master bedroom in Jumeirah and found a large patch of black and green mold, probably from a slow AC leak. It’s been there for who knows how long. How urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned, and is it safe for my family to stay in the house tonight?

The presence of visible mold, especially of that size and with occupants experiencing symptoms, requires immediate action. For tonight, the priority is to isolate the area and limit exposure.

Seal off the master bedroom completely. Do not allow anyone, especially the children, to enter. Keep the door closed and place a towel at the base to prevent spores from circulating into the rest of the house. Increase ventilation in the living areas by running exhaust fans and, if air quality permits, slightly opening other windows. The mold patch itself should not be disturbed, as this will release a large number of spores into the air.

Given the Dubai climate, where high humidity and constant AC use can create ideal conditions for mold, a slow condensate drain leak is a very common cause. This is a serious case due to the extent of growth and the health symptoms already present. You need a professional mold inspection and remediation company to assess the full scope, including the AC system and any structural damage to the subfloor. They will use containment procedures and specialized equipment to safely remove the contaminated materials. Do not attempt to clean this yourself with store-bought solutions, as improper methods will exacerbate the problem.

For verification, ensure any company you hire provides a detailed scope of work, uses HEPA filtration equipment, and can supply before-and-after lab testing to confirm the spore count has been returned to safe levels. The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on indoor air quality, and professional remediation is aligned with these standards.
