How to safely remove mold from bedroom overnight?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black fuzzy patches I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in our villa in Al Barsha. It's been so humid lately and I think it's been growing there for a while, hidden from view. What's the fastest way to deal with this safely so we can sleep in there tonight?

First, do not sleep in that room tonight. The coughing is a clear sign the spores are airborne and affecting your children's respiratory systems. Move them to a well-ventilated room immediately.

For immediate, temporary containment, you can mix a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the visible patches to dampen them and reduce the number of spores becoming airborne. Do not scrub aggressively, as this will aerosolize the mold. This is only a temporary measure to reduce the immediate irritant until proper remediation.

The humidity and constant AC use in Dubai villas, especially in areas like Al Barsha, create a perfect environment for this type of hidden growth. The condensation from AC units often leads to dampness on walls behind furniture. Simply wiping the surface is not a solution; the mold's root structure (hyphae) is likely deep within the plaster or drywall.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended. The black colouration alone does not confirm it's the notorious 'black mold' (Stachybotrys), but any persistent mold in a child's bedroom warrants a professional assessment. They will use moisture meters to find the source of the dampness—which is critical—and take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the species and the concentration of spores in the air you're breathing. This is the only way to know the actual risk level and plan a safe, effective remediation that involves removing contaminated materials, not just surface cleaning.

For long-term prevention, after the source is fixed, keep the wardrobe slightly away from the wall to allow air circulation and consider using a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid months.
