Urgent to treat black mold in humid Dubai climate?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our building in Jumeirah Village Circle. With how humid it's been lately, I'm worried it might spread quickly. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar spray?

The urgency depends on the size and cause. For a few small spots, immediate DIY treatment is reasonable, but identifying the moisture source is critical to prevent recurrence.

In Dubai's climate, that exterior wall likely experiences thermal bridging, where the outdoor heat meets your cooled indoor air, creating a condensation point inside the wall. This hidden moisture feeds the mould you see. Simply cleaning the surface without addressing this won't solve it long-term.

You can handle small areas (under one square meter) yourself. Wear a mask and gloves. A vinegar solution can be effective for surface cleaning, but it won't address the root cause or potential growth inside the wall cavity. After cleaning, monitor the spot daily. If it returns within a week, the moisture issue is active and requires professional assessment.

Professional inspection becomes urgent if the area is large, if you smell a persistent musty odor, or if household members experience unexplained respiratory issues. A certified inspector uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the condensation source within the structure. They can also take a sample for lab analysis to confirm the species, which determines the remediation protocol. For persistent or hidden moisture problems, DIY measures are often insufficient.
