Is small closet mold urgent or can I DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spreading. How urgently do I need to get a professional to look at this, or is it something I can handle myself with a vinegar spray?

Small visible mold is often the tip of the iceberg, as it indicates a moisture issue you can't fully see. In Dubai's climate, that exterior wall is likely a cold bridge, creating condensation inside the wall cavity that feeds mold growth behind the drywall.
You can clean the surface spots yourself with a dedicated mold cleaner or a diluted white vinegar solution. Wear a mask and gloves. However, this is only a temporary fix if the moisture source isn't addressed. The underlying problem will almost certainly return. Given its location on an exterior wall and the current high humidity, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to detect hidden dampness you can't see. This identifies the root cause—often inadequate insulation or a minor leak—preventing it from spreading further into the structure. For a case like this, urgency is moderate. It's not an emergency requiring evacuation, but it should be assessed within a few weeks to prevent it from becoming a larger, more costly problem. The goal is to verify the extent and fix the condensation issue, not just wipe away what's visible. |
