Is my kids' cough from bathroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the last month, and I’m starting to worry it’s because of the black mold that’s been growing in the corner of our master bathroom. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai, and even with the window open, the humidity just doesn’t go away. Is this type of persistent cough a common symptom, and should I take them to a doctor immediately or will cleaning the mold first be enough?

Persistent coughing in children is a common symptom of exposure to bathroom mould, particularly in the humid, poorly ventilated environments typical of older Bur Dubai buildings. The constant high humidity and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mould spores to thrive and become airborne. You should take them to a doctor to rule out other causes and get professional medical advice, as prolonged exposure can exacerbate respiratory issues.
Cleaning the visible mould is a necessary first step, but it may not be sufficient. In many cases, the visible growth is only a small part of a larger colony that has penetrated porous surfaces like grout or drywall behind the tiles. A simple surface clean with bleach or vinegar often addresses the stain but not the root cause, and the mould will return. For a persistent issue like this, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent of the growth and identify the moisture source—often condensation from AC ducts, a hidden pipe leak, or inadequate sealing. They can perform air quality tests to determine the spore count in your bathroom and adjacent rooms, which is the only way to confirm if the air your children are breathing is the irritant. Addressing the underlying moisture problem is the only permanent solution. Improving ventilation with an exhaust fan rated for Dubai's humidity levels is a critical long-term fix. |
