Black mold in bedroom closet: handle myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It's been really humid lately and I think it might be from the AC unit, but I'm not sure. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I just call the building management immediately?

Black mold in a closet is a common issue in Dubai, often caused by high humidity and condensation from AC units. The first step is to determine the source of moisture. Wipe the area with a damp cloth—if it wipes away easily, it’s likely surface condensation. If it’s ingrained or returns quickly, the moisture is coming from behind the wall, possibly from a hidden AC condensate leak or a building envelope issue.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear a mask and gloves. Use a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner, not bleach, as bleach only removes surface color and doesn’t address the root cause. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan afterward. However, this is only a temporary fix if the moisture source isn’t corrected. Given the location is a closet on an exterior wall, the constant cycling of AC against Dubai’s heat and humidity creates a prime environment for mold. The problem will almost certainly recur unless the underlying condensation or leak is repaired. You should inform building management immediately, especially if you suspect an AC leak or seepage from an external wall. Under Dubai regulations, building owners are responsible for the maintenance of structural elements and central AC systems. They should send a technician to inspect the AC drain line, evaporator coil, and the wall cavity for leaks. For persistent or large-scale mold, a professional inspection with lab testing can identify the species and confirm the moisture source, which is crucial for effective remediation. |
