How urgently treat black mold with kids coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it's in a big patch and the wall feels damp. Given how humid it's been, how urgently do I need to get this professionally treated before it affects our health?

Treat this urgently, within days. The combination of visible dampness, a large patch of black mold, and your children's respiratory symptoms means this should be a priority. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can colonize wall cavities quickly, and active coughing indicates the spores are already airborne and affecting your indoor air quality.

For a case of this size with existing health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will identify the moisture source—often condensation from AC ducts in the wall, a leaking pipe, or moisture wicking from the slab—and assess the full extent, which is frequently larger than what's visible. Remediation involves fixing the water issue first, then safely containing and removing the contaminated materials to prevent spreading spores throughout the home during cleanup.

Do not attempt to scrub it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the exposure. Until a professional assesses it, keep the bedroom door closed, ensure the room is well-ventilated, and limit your children's access to that area.

A reputable inspector will typically use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside the wall and may recommend air or surface sampling to identify the mold type. While many black molds are common allergenic types, verification is important for peace of mind, especially with children involved. The goal is to resolve the moisture problem and remove the material to create a long-term solution.
