Black mold found, kids coughing. Need urgent inspection?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now, and I just found a patch of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa. We had that really humid weather last month and I’m worried it’s spread inside the walls. Is this something I need to get inspected immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Yes, you should get this inspected immediately, especially with children showing respiratory symptoms. The combination of Dubai's recent high humidity and the discovery of hidden mold is a significant red flag. Mold found behind furniture often indicates a larger, unseen moisture problem within the wall cavity, which the humid weather would have exacerbated.

The persistent cough in your children is a common reaction to mold spore exposure, and different mold species have varying health impacts. A professional inspection is crucial to determine the extent of the spread and identify the species. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to see inside walls without unnecessary damage. In the UAE, villa constructions can have interstitial condensation issues, especially with year-round AC use creating temperature differentials.

Do not attempt to clean the visible patch yourself, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. Before the inspector arrives, improve air circulation in the room with fans, but avoid using your central AC if the ducts run through the affected wall, as it could spread spores further. Keep the children out of the room.

The inspection will provide a clear scope of the problem and a remediation plan. For a situation like this in a Jumeirah villa, a proper assessment from a company with a microbiology lab is the only way to confirm the environment is safe. The health symptoms make this urgent; don't wait for the weekend.
