Safely remove bathroom mold with a toddler?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold growing in the corners of our master bathroom. It's been getting worse since the humidity started a few weeks ago, especially behind the toilet where it's hard to clean. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of it, considering I have a toddler who crawls around and touches everything?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's humidity is a common trigger for respiratory irritation and coughing, especially in children. For a small, surface-level patch, you can clean it safely yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, and keep the toddler out of the room until surfaces are completely dry.

Create a cleaning solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (1 cup bleach to 1 gallon of water). Apply it directly to the moldy area, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Ensure the room is very well-ventilated during and after the process. The key is to dry the area thoroughly immediately after cleaning with a fan or dehumidifier to prevent immediate regrowth.

For persistent mold behind fixtures like the toilet, the wall cavity behind the tiles may be wet. Surface cleaning won't solve this, and the mold will return. Given the child's symptoms and the difficulty of the location, a professional assessment is wise. They use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and can perform air or swab tests to identify the mold species, which is important for understanding potential health impacts. Proper remediation for a family with a crawling toddler would involve containment of the area to prevent spore spread during the work.

To prevent recurrence, run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider using a portable dehumidifier for an hour each day to manage the high ambient humidity that condenses on cold surfaces.
