Black mold behind wardrobe: call landlord or cleaner?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity lately. What’s the best way to handle this in a Dubai villa – should I call the landlord first or just get a professional cleaning company myself?

Contact your landlord immediately. In Dubai, landlords are generally responsible for addressing mold issues stemming from building integrity, such as inadequate ventilation or water leaks. Document the mold with clear photos and send a formal written notification to them, as this creates a necessary paper trail.

Given the symptoms and the black coloration, a professional inspection is strongly recommended before any cleaning is attempted. The high humidity here, combined with AC usage, creates perfect conditions for mold behind furniture where air doesn't circulate. A proper inspection will identify the moisture source—which could be a small condensation leak, a pipe, or even humidity from an external wall—and assess the extent of the growth, which is often larger than what's visible.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can release a large number of spores into your home's air, potentially worsening your children's coughing. A reputable remediation company will isolate the area, use HEPA filtration to clean the air, and safely remove the contaminated materials. The goal is to fix the moisture problem first, then address the mold itself. After remediation, a clearance test from an independent lab is the only way to verify the spore count in the room has returned to a safe level.
