How to remove black mold and when to call Dubai Marina management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It must have been growing slowly for a while, but I only spotted it today while reorganizing. The wall feels a bit damp to the touch, and I'm really worried it's spreading.
What's the most effective way to handle this myself, and at what point should I call my building management here in Dubai Marina?

Small, isolated patches of black mold can often be handled yourself, but your situation suggests a moisture source that needs addressing. Since the wall feels damp, the mold is likely growing due to condensation from a cold spot or a hidden leak.
For a patch smaller than one square meter, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle—vinegar is effective on many common molds in our climate. Lightly spray the area, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and ensure the area is completely dry. Dispose of any contaminated materials like rags in a sealed bag. Do not use bleach, as it can worsen indoor air quality and only removes surface discoloration. However, the damp wall is the critical issue. In a high-rise like Dubai Marina, this often indicates a breach in the building envelope or a leaking pipe within the wall cavity. This is when you must call your building management immediately. Under Dubai regulations, the building owner is responsible for the structure and common services, including the integrity of external walls and internal plumbing chases. They need to investigate and repair the source of the moisture. DIY removal is only a temporary fix until the leak is sealed. Given the humidity and constant AC use, mold can regrow quickly without solving the underlying problem. If the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or you experience persistent respiratory symptoms, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent and identify the species. |
