Professional mold removal or DIY for Dubai bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It must have been growing for a while because the room has started to feel damp and has a weird, earthy smell. What's the best way to handle this in Dubai—should I call one of those professional mold removal companies or is this something I can tackle myself with products from ACE?

The damp feeling and earthy smell indicate active growth, which is common in Dubai bedrooms where exterior walls meet air-conditioned interiors, creating condensation. The wall behind furniture is a classic trouble spot due to restricted airflow.

For a small area (under one square meter), DIY is possible. Move the wardrobe away from the wall completely. Clean the visible mould with a dedicated mould remover or a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water), wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, this only addresses surface growth. The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. It could be condensation from the AC unit's cold air hitting the warm wall, a tiny plumbing leak, or moisture wicking through the concrete from the humid exterior air.

Given the description of it spreading and the persistent dampness, the moisture issue is likely ongoing and the mould may have penetrated the plasterboard or paint. In these cases, professional assessment is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters to find the exact source of water intrusion and can determine if wall cavities are affected, which DIY cannot address. Reputable firms will provide a lab analysis to identify the mould type, which is important for understanding any potential health risks and ensuring the correct remediation method is used.

Ultimately, DIY is a temporary fix if the underlying moisture problem isn't solved. For a confirmed, spreading case like this, a professional inspection is the most reliable way to ensure it is resolved completely and doesn't return.
