How to permanently kill bathroom mold causing cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold growing in our master bathroom. It's all along the bottom of the wall behind the toilet, which is always a bit damp. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it getting this bad, especially after the recent humidity. What's the most effective way to kill this mold for good, and should I be calling my building management to fix the underlying dampness first?

The dampness behind the toilet is likely a slow leak from the flush tank's seal or a supply line connection, which Dubai's high humidity then exacerbates. This constant moisture source is why the mold keeps returning and is almost certainly the cause of the respiratory irritation your kids are experiencing.

For a permanent fix, you must address the leak first. Contact your building management immediately; under typical Dubai tenancy agreements, they are responsible for repairing the building's plumbing infrastructure, including concealed leaks in the walls. Do not attempt a major clean-up until the moisture source is professionally repaired, as you'll just be disturbing spores into the air without solving the problem.

Once the leak is fixed and the wall is completely dry, you can treat the mold. For a small area, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product applied with scrubbing is often effective. However, given the location and the fact it's causing health symptoms, the wall cavity may be more affected than it appears. Simply cleaning the surface may not be enough if the gypsum board inside has absorbed moisture and fostered growth.

For health-related cases, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the full extent. They can determine if the drywall needs replacement to truly resolve it. To prevent recurrence, ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is working correctly and run it for at least 30 minutes after showers. Using a squeegee on shower walls also helps reduce ambient humidity that condenses on cooler surfaces like toilet tanks.
