Is this black mold dangerous and need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled patches spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall behind the wardrobe. It’s been really humid lately and I’m worried it’s gotten worse since we had that AC leak fixed last month. Is this dangerous black mold and should we get a professional to handle it, or can I clean it myself with something from ACE Hardware?

What you're describing is classic for Dubai's climate. That combination of high humidity, an AC leak (even if fixed), and a piece of furniture trapping stagnant air creates the perfect environment for mould growth.

While the term "black mould" is often used for Stachybotrys, which can produce mycotoxins, most black-coloured mould in homes here is Cladosporium or Aspergillus niger. These primarily cause irritation—congestion, sneezing, or worsened allergies—especially for children or those with asthma. The only way to know the species and its potential risk is through a professional lab analysis.

Given the spread and the history of a water leak, this is not a surface-level issue you should clean yourself. Bleach or store-bought solutions only remove the visible stain, not the root mould hyphae growing into the porous wall material. Disturbing it without proper containment will spread spores throughout your bedroom.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will identify the moisture source (it could be residual dampness in the wall from the leak, condensation, or even a hidden issue) and take an air or surface sample for culturing in a lab to confirm the type. Remediation involves isolating the area, removing the contaminated material, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air, not just wiping it down. For a case like this, a DIY approach often leads to a much faster and more severe recurrence.
