Mold behind wardrobe: call landlord or cleaning company?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when I moved the furniture to clean after the recent humidity. The wall feels damp and there are these black and greenish spots spreading along the baseboard. What's the most effective way to get rid of this safely, and should I be calling my landlord first or a professional cleaning company?

Stop using that room, especially for the kids, and call your landlord immediately. Under Dubai rental law (RERA), the landlord is responsible for maintaining the property, including fixing the source of moisture and the resulting damage. This is a structural issue, not just a surface cleaning job.

The damp wall suggests an internal leak or severe condensation, which is common here due to high humidity and constant AC use. Simply wiping the visible mold is ineffective and unsafe—disturbing it without containment will release spores into the air, likely worsening the coughs.

Your landlord should send a professional to first identify and repair the water source—likely a leaking pipe, faulty AC condensation drain, or moisture seeping from the bathroom. Only after the wall is dry should mold remediation begin. For a spread this size, proper remediation involves containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth.

Given the health symptoms, a post-remediation test to confirm the spore count has returned to normal indoor levels is advisable. This is often the only way to get verifiable proof the issue is resolved.
