How to safely remove black mold and check for hidden mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It must have been growing slowly because the room has felt damp for a while, especially since the weather got more humid. I'm really worried about our health and the damage to the walls. What's the most effective way to get rid of this safely and who should I call to check for hidden mold in the walls?

First, address the immediate health risk by isolating the area. Do not disturb the mold, as this can release spores. Move the clothes and any other items away from the area. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself using a solution of one part bleach to four parts water, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given the damp feeling and the location in a closet—a classic spot for condensation issues in Dubai—this is likely a symptom of a larger humidity problem.

The most critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In Dubai's climate, this is often condensation from an AC duct running inside the wall or a small leak. Simply cleaning the visible mold is a temporary fix if the underlying cause isn't resolved.

For a proper assessment of hidden mold and the moisture source, you need a professional inspection. They use tools like borescopes to look inside wall cavities and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of dampness. The inspection should determine the extent of the problem before any remediation begins.

For remediation, always call a licensed contractor specializing in mold removal, not a general handyman. They will set up containment to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home during the removal process. They should also be able to provide documentation, such as before-and-after photos and potentially air quality test results, to verify the area is clean. In many cases, a small section of drywall may need to be removed to properly treat the cavity behind it.

Given you've been in the villa for two years, also consider having your AC unit and ductwork inspected for microbial growth, as this is a common vector for spreading spores and contributing to high indoor humidity levels.
