Dealing with black mold in Dubai bedroom myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall facing the outside. It wasn't there during my last clean-out a few months ago, but with all the humidity lately, it seems to have appeared. I'm really worried about it spreading to our clothes and affecting our health.
What's the most effective way to deal with this myself, or is this a job where I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company in Dubai?

First, identify and stop the moisture source. In Dubai, this is often condensation from an AC duct running inside that wall or a small leak from recent humidity. Check for any dampness on the wall or a musty smell. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can often handle it yourself.
Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (check manufacturer guidelines for your wall surface). Scrub the mouldy area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. Dispose of any cleaning materials immediately. However, DIY is only for surface-level mould you can see. Since this is on an exterior wall and appeared suddenly, the moisture source could be inside the wall cavity, which is a bigger issue. If the mould returns quickly after cleaning, if the drywall feels soft or crumbly, or if the area is larger than a square meter, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside walls, which is critical in our climate where hidden condensation is common. For health safety, if anyone in the home has respiratory issues, skip DIY and get a professional assessment. |
