Safe DIY cleaning for bathroom black mold with kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’ve just spotted patches of black mold in the corner of our master bathroom where the shower is. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai and I think the grout might be cracked, letting moisture in. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

Black mold in bathrooms is common here due to Dubai's high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a small patch on a non-porous surface like tiles, a DIY approach is often safe.

Mix one part distilled white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. For tougher patches, a paste of baking soda and water can be scrubbed on. Avoid bleach; it only removes surface color and can release harmful fumes in a confined space, especially with poor ventilation. The vinegar solution is effective against many common household molds and is far safer for children. Always wear a mask and gloves during cleaning, and ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated by opening a window or running the exhaust fan.

The real issue is the cracked grout you mentioned. This allows moisture to penetrate the wall cavity behind the tiles, where mold can grow unseen. DIY cleaning only addresses the visible surface. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, the growth is likely deeper. For persistent mold or if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent behind the tiles. This is a frequent finding in older Bur Dubai buildings.
