How to remove black mold from bedroom closet myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It must have been growing slowly because the room has felt damp for a while, but I only spotted it today while cleaning. We keep the AC running but that wall is an exterior one. What's the most effective way to treat this myself without having to call in a professional company right away?

First, address the moisture source. That exterior wall likely has a thermal bridge, causing condensation when the cool room air meets the hot outside wall. This is common in Dubai's climate. Move all items away from the wall to allow air circulation.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Do not use bleach; it only removes the colour and doesn't kill the roots. Instead, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of white distilled vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly with a stiff brush, then wipe it down with the solution and let it dry completely.

After cleaning, keep the area dry. Use a moisture absorber like silica gel or a small electric dehumidifier inside the closet. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent, reasonable temperature to minimise the temperature differential that causes condensation. Consider having the exterior wall inspected for potential insulation issues.

If the mould returns quickly, covers a larger area, or you notice a persistent musty smell, it has likely penetrated the wallboard. At that point, a professional inspection is needed to assess the extent behind the wall, as DIY methods won't address the root cause.
