Black mold around AC vent: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp odor and I just found patches of black mold around the vent in my master bedroom in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's been getting worse over the last few weeks since the humidity really kicked in. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or is this a job for a professional mold removal company?

That damp odor and visible black mold around the AC vent strongly suggests condensation buildup inside the ductwork, a very common issue here in JVC due to our high humidity levels and year-round AC use. The system is likely creating a perfect damp environment for mold to grow out of sight.
For a small, visible patch on the exterior wall or vent cover, a DIY approach with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution can be a temporary surface fix. However, if the mold reappears quickly or you notice that musty smell every time the AC turns on, the root problem is inside the unit or ducts where you can't see or reach it. This is a very common scenario in Dubai's climate. In this case, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Local regulations, like Dubai Municipality's guidelines, often require proper containment and disposal methods for mold remediation to prevent cross-contamination. A reputable provider will use borescopes to inspect the hidden ductwork and air testing to identify the mold species and spore count, as some types require more specific remediation protocols. DIY attempts on internal systems can often disturb the colony and spread spores throughout your apartment, making the problem significantly worse. The most effective long-term solution is to address the source of the moisture—often a clogged condensate drain line or an AC unit that's oversized for the space—and then perform a proper remediation of the affected areas. |
